Steps of this run

You ask

Our test site's footer ended with “Designed with WordPress”, the credit its theme ships with. The owner typed this into the chat in the WP dashboard, in plain words.

Take “Designed with WordPress” out of my footer and put our name there.

You see it first

It checked the theme, read the footer and came back with a card 22 seconds later. Its After view shows the footer as it would look: Quillmoor Pottery bottom right, where the credit was. Now shows the footer as it is, and Code shows the one line it swaps. Nothing has changed yet.

On a phone too

The same card shows the new footer on a phone. Before anything changed, it pointed out a catch: the copyright line already says Quillmoor Pottery, so on a narrow screen the name shows twice.

One thing the pictures show: on a phone the name now appears twice on the same line — the copyright line and the new one sit side by side.

You press the button

Only now does the footer change. It swaps the credit for the name, reads the footer back to check, and the card turns green with an Undo link. The run took 37 seconds in all; for 14 of them the card sat waiting for us to press.

  2. Checking the change

It's on the site

The right-hand end of the test site's footer right after, as a visitor sees it. Bottom right: Quillmoor Pottery, where “Designed with WordPress” used to be. Every page shares this footer.

Done. I checked afterwards, and it now says "Quillmoor Pottery".

Undo, if you want

We pressed Undo to leave the test site as it was. The credit came back, link and all. It checked the footer again and showed what it put back.

Undone. I checked afterwards, and it's back the way it was.

How to remove “Powered by WordPress” yourself

Checked on WP 7.1, Oct 11, 2026

  1. 1. Open Appearance › Editor in your dashboard. If Appearance has Customize but no Editor, your theme is a classic one: read the note below.

The WP dashboard menu with Appearance open and Editor outlined
  2. 2. The Editor opens with a dark menu down the left side. Click Patterns there.

The Site Editor's Design menu with Patterns outlined, below Identity, Styles, Pages and Navigation
  3. 3. Pick Footer from the list. A small picture of your footer appears: click it, and the footer opens with the credit at its foot.

Patterns with Footer chosen in the list, and the footer's picture outlined: click it to open the footer
  4. 4. Click the credit line once. Depending on your theme, it says “Designed with WordPress” or “Proudly powered by WordPress”.

The footer open in the Site Editor, the Designed with WordPress line selected and outlined, its toolbar above it
  5. 5. Select its words and type your business name. To take the line out instead, press ⋮ on its toolbar and choose Delete.

The same line with the business name typed over the credit, not saved yet
  6. 6. Press the blue Save button at the top right. Then open your site in a new tab: the credit is gone wherever this footer shows.

The Save button at the top right of the Site Editor, outlined, above the Template Part and Block tabs

Only Appearance › Customize, no Editor? Then your theme is an older (classic) one. Open Customize and look for a Footer or Copyright section where the credit can be changed or cleared. Many themes have none, because the credit is written into the theme's own files. CMSHands can't change those yet.

On most block themes every page uses the same footer, so the credit leaves them all at once. If your copyright line already shows your business name, putting the name in the credit's spot shows it twice. In our test run the assistant spotted that in the phone picture, before anything changed. You could delete the line instead, or put your town or phone number there.

What it won't do here

Older (classic) themes

A classic theme usually writes the credit into its own files, which it can't change yet. It can write a style rule that hides the line, for you to paste.

Theme settings screens and widgets

Some themes keep the credit on their own settings screen or in a widget. It can't change the credit there.

A credit in a page-builder footer

If a page builder made your footer, a plugin such as Elementor or Divi that lays out pages its own way, its credit stays put: those footers aren't supported.

A logo where the credit was

It puts words in the credit's spot. It can't upload a logo or picture for that spot.

Why it won't wreck your site

Nothing changes until you press the button.

Every change comes as a card that names it. Nothing happens until you press the button or Not now.

You see it first.

Old words in red, new words in green. For layout, before-and-after pictures on a computer and a phone.

One click undoes it.

When something can't be undone, like deleting a page or a plugin, the card says so before you press.

Questions

How do I remove “Powered by WordPress” from my footer?

On a block theme, go to Appearance › Editor › Patterns › Footer and open the footer. Click the credit line, delete it or type your own words over it, and press Save. On an older theme, look for a footer setting in Appearance › Customize. If there isn't one, the line sits in the theme's files. The steps above show every screen.

Where does “Proudly powered by WordPress” come from?

Your theme puts it there. It's a thank-you line in the footer, the piece every page shares. Older default themes such as Twenty Twenty-Three say “Proudly powered by WordPress”. Twenty Twenty-Four and Twenty Twenty-Five say “Designed with WordPress” instead. Whatever the words, it's one line in one place, so you remove it once for the whole site.

Is it OK to remove the WordPress credit?

Yes. The credit is a thank-you line, not a rule, and the Site Editor lets you change it like any other text in your footer. If you paid for your theme, it may come with its own terms, so check them first.

Can I get the credit back later?

Yes. In WP, follow steps 1 to 6 again and type the old line back in. With CMSHands, press Undo on the card. In our test run it put the credit back word for word, link and all, and the assistant said: “Undone. I checked afterwards, and it's back the way it was.”

Is it free?

To start, yes: 3 changes with no account, then 10 a month once you add your email. Questions are free, up to 30 a day.
