Change your site title and tagline

A free plugin adds a chat to your WP dashboard. Type “Change my tagline to…” or “Rename my site to…”. See it first, press the button, undo in one click.

Changes them in Settings › General, where WP keeps both.

  • Nothing changes without your OK
  • Undo in one click, or a warning first
  • No account, no password to share

Needs WP 6.3 to 7.1, PHP 8.0 or newer, and an administrator login. One site per install.

The download is a plugin. Turning it on connects your site to cmshands.com and adds 3 small rescue files. Deleting the plugin removes them and everything it stored. What we send

Change my tagline to “Handmade mugs and bowls, fired in small batches”.

Steps of this run

You ask

You type what you want in the chat, in your own words. The chat sits in your WP dashboard.

Change my tagline to “Handmade mugs and bowls, fired in small batches”.

You see it first

It reads your site settings and comes back with a card: the old tagline in red, the new one in green. Nothing has changed yet.

Ready for you to review.
  1. 2 secondsReading your site settings
  2. 3 secondsPreparing the change for your OK

You press the button

Only now does it change the site. It changes the tagline, reads it back to check, and the card turns green with an Undo link.

  1. 10 secondsChanging a site setting
  2. Checking the change

It's on the site

The test site's footer right after. Its theme, Twenty Twenty-Four, shows the tagline under the site title: the new words are live.

Done. I checked afterwards, and it now says "Handmade mugs and bowls, fired in small batches".

Undo, if you want

One press of Undo put the old tagline back. It checked again and showed what it put back.

Undone. I checked afterwards, and it's back the way it was.

How to change your site title and tagline in WordPress yourself

Checked on WP 7.1, Oct 11, 2026

  1. 1. In your dashboard, go to Settings › General. The screen that opens is called General Settings.

The WP dashboard menu with Settings open and General outlined
  2. 2. In the Site Title box, type your site's name the way you want visitors to see it.

General Settings with the Site Title box outlined. It holds the site's name, Quillmoor Pottery
  3. 3. In the Tagline box, type a short line about what you do. Leave it empty if you don't want one.

The Tagline box outlined, right under Site Title. It holds the short line about the shop
  4. 4. Scroll to the bottom and press Save Changes. WP shows “Settings saved.” at the top of the screen.

The Save Changes button at the bottom of General Settings, outlined
  5. 5. Open your site in a new tab. Your theme decides where the title and tagline show: often the header, the footer or both.

The footer of the test site, a block theme, with the site title and the tagline under it outlined

On an older (classic) theme, the kind with Appearance › Customize instead of Editor, both boxes are also under Appearance › Customize › Site Identity, with a preview as you type. It's the same setting either way.

On WP 7.1 with a block theme (your dashboard has Appearance › Editor), the same two boxes are also under Appearance › Editor › Identity. Wherever you change them, WP keeps no history: once you save, the old words are gone. CMSHands keeps them on the card, so Undo brings them back.

What it won't do here

Logos and site icons

It changes words, not pictures. It can't upload a logo or a site icon, the small picture in the browser tab.

The title your SEO plugin writes

If an SEO plugin sets the title search engines show, that title lives in the plugin's own settings. It doesn't change those.

Your site's address

It doesn't change the two address boxes on the same screen, or your permalinks (how your page addresses look).

Other settings on that screen

We haven't tested time zone, date format or the other general settings yet, so this page doesn't promise them.

Why it won't wreck your site

Nothing changes until you press the button.

Every change comes as a card that names it. Nothing happens until you press the button or Not now.

You see it first.

Old words in red, new words in green.

One click undoes it.

When something can't be undone, like deleting a page or a plugin, the card says so before you press.

Questions

What is the site title in WordPress?

It's your site's name. WP puts it in the browser tab, most themes show it in the header, and search results often show it beside your page names. You set it in Settings › General, in the Site Title box. Changing it doesn't change your web address.

What is a tagline in WordPress?

It's a short line about your site, like “Mugs and bowls, made by hand”. It sits under Settings › General, below the title. Many themes show it near the title or in the footer, and on your home page WP adds it to the browser tab. Older sites may still have WP's old default line there: change it, or clear the box.

Where do I change the site title in WordPress?

In Settings › General, in the first box, Site Title. Type the new name and press Save Changes at the bottom. On WP 7.1 with a block theme, the same box is also in Appearance › Editor › Identity; on an older theme, in Appearance › Customize › Site Identity. All three change one setting.

Can I change the font of my site title?

Yes, in WP. On a block theme, go to Appearance › Editor › Styles, choose Blocks, then Site Title (the search box finds it). Pick the font and size there, then press Save. The tagline has its own entry, Site Tagline. On an older theme, look in Appearance › Customize; not every theme offers it.

Can I undo a title or tagline change?

WP itself keeps no history of these settings, so note the old words before you save. With CMSHands, press Undo on the card. In our test run it put the old tagline back, and the assistant said: “Undone. I checked afterwards, and it's back the way it was.”

Is it free?

To start, yes: 3 changes with no account, then 10 a month once you add your email. Questions are free, up to 30 a day.
